WHERE YOUR THIRST IS HISTORY

Even in ancient times, people knew of "sparkling water", occurring naturally when carbon dioxide would dissolve in spring water near volcanoes. These waters also contained various minerals and salts and were therefore prized for their healthful and medicinal properties. Although various man-made beverages contained carbonation throughout history (such as beer and sparkling wine), it wasn't until the 1700's that man learned how to artificially carbonate plain water. The real breakthrough for "soda water" was in 1832 in New York City when a simple machine was invented that allowed businesses easy access to carbonated water (at least when the machine didn't explode). This invention allowed pharmacists to offer carbonated water mixed with various medicines for their customers. Sweet syrups were added to make these elixirs more palatable. As these soda concoctions became more popular, a formal "soda fountain" area was created in most drugstores across the U.S. until there were as many as 50,000 soda fountains by 1895. This was the golden era of soda fountains and it is the history we celebrate at The Jerks.

What is a 'jerk'?
During the long history of soda fountains there were various types of valves and levers used to dispense carbonated water, but by the 1920's the standardization of soda fountain equipment gave us the ubiquitous large levers used in 20th century soda fountains. The person behind the counter of a soda fountain was nicknamed a "jerk" or "soda jerk" because they would pull (jerk) that big lever to dispense carbonated water to make a soda. That big lever is two-action, with a high pressure or a high volume flow depending on which way you move it.

Why are there almost no soda fountains today?
The popularity of fast food in the 1960's killed off most soda fountains. It wasn't that fast food was better, it was that franchising made it possible to offer quick food and treats at a much lower price point.

Is The Jerks a franchise?
No, it is not. The Jerks is an idea created by a Cartersville native who has called Cartersville home for decades. We have taken the best of 120 or so years of soda fountain history and combined it with a commitment to high quality service to bring you this unique experience. We pride ourselves on being fun and a maybe just a little weird. This is a no-tipping restaurant concept harkening back to an era when service with a smile was included at no charge.
